Scutellinia crinita
Ciao,
Ecco quanto ho potuto osservare:
ascoma piccolo, circa 3 mm.diametro

Adio Patty
For me, typical Scutellinia crinita. Two important reasons : macroscopic view of hairs (long and medium, alterned, spaced hairs) and spores form.
About your hypothesis, S. scutellata : it's a long work, not finished today for a lot of reasons :
- S. scutellata was the name most used in the past but this is not a common species and it must come to identify specific limits.
- Currently, we have clearly identified S. crinita, very common, and S. pilatii (Svrcek typus + Schumacher's collection + DNA of personal collections from Pyrenees).
- Several other collections (herbaria + personal) refer to something else, which I call "scutellata complex" for now.
- We work it with phylogeny but things are complicated because many specimens identified S. scutellata in official herbaria are other species . So, it's important to compare just personal collection with other personal collection because Genbank data are false by the misidentified herbaria specimens at the beginning of the study !
- In addition, Yao & Spooner proposed synonymy (crinita and scutellata), which is not a good idea.
- There is another species (or two) that is not crinita or pilatii. But this is not the example of your collection.
Here, I'm pretty sure that's represents S. crinita.
Amically ,

Re: Scutellinia crinita

Re: Scutellinia crinita
Yes, Patty. Me too, I hope to find the real mythical "scutellata" but, like I said, it's very long to determinate which species, in the complex, represents the real...patty ha scritto: Riuscirò mai a vedere la mitica, vera S. scutellata? Mai dire mai…….
And perhaps an impossible work because typus is inexploitable !
The rests of collections (herbaria collections) are all of other species !
Schumacher's collections are a little obscure (some crinita and some another species, probably the real scutellata... but perhaps two species in this complex... perhaps more...).
Today, I'm unable to say what is S. scutellata !
I promise you : it's very, VERY difficult !!

Re: Scutellinia crinita
In these cases somebody should take a decision.
Obviously the holotype specimen does not exists, but the name is from Linnè, sanctioned by Fries.
As there are some infraspecific taxa, I think the best to do is to study the types of the infraspecific taxa to fully understand the differences with the type variety or form.
Then it should be possible to know how Scutellinia scutellata "have to be"; then, if it does exists one taxon with such combination of features, to find one good collection and designate it as neotype. No matter if the collection should be determined with another name (it will fall in synonymy).
To start from the infraspecific taxa is only a way to try to reduce the name changes... Nobody is really sure if the infraspecific taxa are really relate with the first one scutellata.
But all this work must be done with a great knowledge of the genus and accurate analysis of the protologue and all the possible data...
Good luck

I'm agree with you but...
Yes but, two or three taxons exist with such combination of features. The difficulty isn't to designate one of them... but which ?mfilippa ha scritto:Then it should be possible to know how Scutellinia scutellata "have to be"; then, if it does exists one taxon with such combination of features, to find one good collection and designate it as neotype. Because, it is important for me to keep things simple and don't mix more. Perhaps a species described before (and synonymised after) is corresponding . This is the same thing in the "nigrohirtula complex" (two different species for me, with philogeny data) and the "umbrorum complex" (two different species too). Therefore find the older names already described and too quickly synonymized rather is better than creating another new names ...
Many thanks Mariomfilippa ha scritto:But all this work must be done with a great knowledge of the genus and accurate analysis of the protologue and all the possible data...
Good luck
This is why, when I find some Helvella in mountain (dovrensis, phlebophora, rivularis ... and some others very odd ... probably not described yet ! ) I'm walking on. Because, I collect just Scutellinias only !
Anyway, Helvella, nobody cares!
