Hello Darniella,
this can be macroceophalus, but does not have to. C. radiata can also become really huge. How wide were the spores? Up to 8,5 µm: radiata; broader, up to 10 µm: macrocephala.
All the best,
Andreas

Re: Coprinopsis possibilmente macrocephala
Hi, Sorry I was very busy the entire week. The spores measure 6.9-8.5 wide (average 7.7), but although I'm not an expert, I am finding it hard to assign it to C. radiata since in the descriptions I've read, the species is minute, with a pileus up to 15mm (usually 10mm). This specimen was 4cm high and the hat 2.0-2.5cm wide. C. macrocephala spores are given as 7.5-8.5 (-10um).
A bit tricky Andreas - do you still retain C. radiata is a better taxon for this finding ? I attach some more images

Re: Coprinopsis possibilmente macrocephala
Hello Darniella,
I believe there is no secure feature to distinguish radiata/macrocephala (ecept sequencing). Spore dimensions and shapes overlap.
And also the size of mushrooms. I have grown on elephant dung radiata, tiny to large mushrooms (stipe up to 150 mm, cap up to 35 mm broad) mixed. In case of doubt, I plead for radiata.
All the best,
Andreas

Re: Coprinopsis possibilmente macrocephala
Andreas, hope you fine.
So I went to the same population early morning, the dung was still there and I could gather more data.
I have measured the diameter of the pileus of all the specimens present and these are the results in mm:
14,13,28, 15,11,30, 7,12,35,20,37,21,12,13,32,18,15,30,10. Range : 7mm-37mm.
Then I took 3 specimens: 1. young and small, pileus still conical, 2. the largest pileus (mature, 37mm wide) and 3. a an avergae-sized specimen (mature, 18mm wide) and for each I checked the spores sizes.
I got these results:
[1] Small specimen (L x W):
11.77 7.11

Re: Coprinopsis possibilmente macrocephala
I remember very well that the spore data of my first report was from a young specimen, which I chose so that until I arrive home, I can still work on it. I am surprised that there is a discrepancy in spore size between young and fully mature specimens, at least in coprinopsis.
I think now C. macrocephala is most suitable name for this beautiful population.

Hello Darniella,
what an extensive work!
I think you can with good conscience call the find macrocephala.
All the best,
Andreas
